Sustainability is key with new CQU permaculture courses
SUSTAINABILITY is being tackled head-on with world-leading courses in permaculture design being introduced by CQUniversity from next year.
Sustainability is the fastest growing job sector in the world, prompting the university's new post-graduate programs.
CQUniversity Professor Drew Dawson said the essential aim was to teach people how to live sustainably.
"Permaculture is all about the fair and equal distribution of resources," he said.
"It is a discipline that teaches people a system-based approach to understanding and practising regenerative and sustainable living skills."
CQU's programs are one of the first of their kind in the world and offer a unique opportunity for students in Central Queensland to gain a recognised degree in the field.
"The post-graduate program not only provides new opportunities, but allows the principles of permaculture to be adapted to countless other jobs," Prof Dawson said yesterday.
He said the course was primarily designed to develop sustainability in business but also provided opportunities to work across various fields, including landscaping, business model development and education.
The co-ordinator of Armstrong Street Community Garden, Andrea Maxwell, said it was great to see permaculture finally gaining mainstream recognition.
"Permaculture has the potential to change the agricultural paradigm," she said.
"It is a much more sustainable approach to food production and distribution.
"It is wonderful to see this idea being perpetuated into the community."
Andrea believes the recognition and use of permaculture is something communities can benefit from as it is so adaptable.
"Permaculture harnesses a unique opportunity which allows this system to be applied across various social situations and climates," she said.
"It is such an efficient system in the idea that once you establish the structure, it is self-sustaining.
"People are looking to develop jobs in this type of field and this course will position people to work in this particular area.
"There is a substantial call for a program like this in Rockhampton and CQUniversity has answered that call."
