Sweet task gives students a taste of engineering studies
BUILDING a retaining wall out of sugar cubes may not seem like a hard task, but these girls would beg to differ.
Ksenia Metilkova was one of the high school students who saw physics come to life yesterday at the Engineering Link Project at CQUniversity.
Students from 13 schools around Central Queensland, including Mackay, Rockhampton and Blackwater, will get a taste of the engineering industry during the program, which runs until tomorrow.
Ksenia, a Year 11 student at Toolooa State High School in Gladstone, said the program was a good experience.
"At school, we learn theory," she said. "Here, we learn something practical."
Ksenia said the team work involved allowed students to play to their strengths when completing the given tasks.
Toolooa State High School science teacher, Joanne Cooper, said the program often helped students decide if they wanted to pursue engineering at university.
"It gives them some real life experience of the physics and maths they learn at school," she said.
