Swimmer has new Valentine
ROCKHAMPTON'S Penny Palmer had one of the best Valentine's Days ever last week, but it wasn't her husband's doing.
It was another great love in Penny's life.
For 35 years Penny has had a relationship with the Rockhampton's southside pool, and last Tuesday she was finally able to do her laps in the new multi-million dollar facility.
"I have waited a very long time to do this - it's a dream come true," she said.
Penny had many fond memories of the old pool, which was where all four of her children learnt to swim.
"I well remember being the butt of the joke when swimming coach Otto Sonleightner told me to 'swim in lane nine' (when there were only eight)," she said.
"Now we have a lane nine."
Penny said it was wonderful to swim in a pool with no cracked tiles and better markings.
"I can honestly attest to the magnificent facility we now have," she said.
Penny said swimming was a huge part of her life, having swum in pools in Townsville, Tweed Heads and Brisbane.
"I just hope the new pool gets the heating soon so we can use it all year round."
