Tailgating is a pain in the rear

IT IS human nature to quickly forget our misdemeanours but hold onto any injustice done to us, no matter how small.

Never is this mindset more apparent than on the road, where we can all remember the last 10 times we were cut off or tailgated and yet simultaneously struggle to recall a time when we might have done it to someone else.

Honestly, I dread to think how much of my life has been spent getting annoyed at other drivers on the road, but at least I'm not alone.

RACQ's annual What Drives You Crazy? survey has revealed some of the most frustrating driver behaviours on Queensland roads.

And while texting, failing to indicate, and speeding up while being overtaken were some of the top 10, tailgating was once again the clear number one pet hate of motorists.

Tailgating motorists don't just lack in courtesy, they lack common sense, because it's an exceptionally dangerous behaviour.

The hope is that by highlighting the issue, we all recognise that tailgating is a serious problem. And maybe, just maybe, next time we'll back off.

The onus is us as individual motorists to follow the rules, and more importantly adopt a courteous approach that respects other drivers.

Wishful thinking? I hope not.
