Funeral director wants stigma aside for suicide chats

THERE'S more people who die by suicide in Mackay than what the community thinks, according to Mackay Funerals and Sarina Funerals manager Belinda Hassan.

And based on her experiences, she thought the issue needed to be talked about.

"When people lose family in a car accident it helps them to speak to other people who lost family in a car accident," Mrs Hassan said.

"Suicide's the same.

"And if people talk about it more, it's less likely they will get to the point of actually doing it."

She said emergency services and everyone involved suffered after.

"Sometimes it's people I know personally who have died by suicide," she said.

"It's awful for us and we're doing it all the time, more than what's reported in the media."

She said talking to kids about it might encourage them to get help. Kids are really impulsive," she said.

"If there were more people talking to kids about why other people did it, that might help."

But she said when covering funerals media also needed to respect people's grief processes.

She warned against photographs at funerals that glamorise the issue.
