Teen jailed for Domino's delivery man robbery

A TEENAGER who robbed a pizza delivery man as he went to drop off an order has been jailed for three years.

Jesse Baide Cook-Gates, 19, had called the Maroochydore Domino's pizza store on November 1 last year to order food to be delivered to a Kuluin address.

Maroochydore District Court was this morning told the delivery driver had been approached by a man who was wearing a balaclava and holding a tomahawk as he made his way up the delivery address driveway about 10.15pm.

The armed man took the food and fled the scene.

Police subsequently used telephone records to make their arrest.

Judge Long this morning heard Cook-Gates and his co-offender, who is yet to be sentenced, had blamed each other for being the person who wielded the tomahawk.

Without a definitive statement on who had physically robbed the man, Judge Long agreed to sentence Cook-Gates as having equal involvement.

Crown prosecutor Suzanne Cantatore said the victim had been delivering pizzas for nine years without incident until that night.

Ms Cantatore said a victim impact statement showed the incident had a devastating effect on the delivery man's life.

She said it had left him unable to work at night or as a delivery man.

Cook-Gates was on probation for a previous armed robbery when the Kuluin incident occurred.

Ms Cantatore said Cook-Gates had four robbery offences in a five-year period.

"His offending has escalated and the threat of adult prison has done nothing to deter him so far," Ms Cantatore said.

Defence barrister David James said his client had left home at the age of 12 and had fathered three children, aged seven, two and 12 months.

Cook-Gates had moved to the Toowoomba area earlier this year to work on a farm and get away from bad influences.

Judge Long noted the objective of the offending was to obtain pizza and drinks.

He sentenced Cook-Gates to three years in prison with a parole release date of July 26 next year.
