PARAMEDICS have treated two teenage girls after a near-drowning at Marcoola Beach today.

The girls came into trouble just after 1pm near Surfair resort.

Lifeguard supervisor north Anthony King said the girls were not swimming at a patrolled beach.

A male aged in his 60s spotted the pair in trouble and helped one of the teenagers to shore.

A member of the public phoned Triple 0 and alerted paramedics and lifeguards.

The girls took in some water and were comforted on scene.

The rescue comes after a Coolum man died while swimming with his family this week at Marcoola beach.

Mr King said it was imperative to swim between the red and yellow flags.

"Please everyone, come to beaches that are patrolled," Mr King said.

"This incident today near Surfair had the potential to be a disaster if not for the help of the passerby.

"We have a lot of water moving around at the moment and a bit of swell so by swimming in the patrolled areas, you are in the safest area."
