IF you were looking for the face of the storm that tore through Fernvale you would look no further than aged pensioner Rhonda McCulkin.

Mrs McCulkin had lived quietly in a house on McCulkin's Lane for more than 40 years.

On Tuesday that home was all but destroyed.

Yesterday, Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Jo-Ann Miller called out to see Mrs McCulkin to assure her she wouldn't be forgotten.

During the visit Mrs McCulkin asked the minister for help with temporary accommodation, such as a demountable house or caravan, so she could stay on her property to look after her animals.

"What else can I do, I don't want to go into a motel," she tearfully told Ms Miller.

The Minister advised Ms McCulkin they would help her in any way they could.

"This has been extremely stressful for you and the best thing you can do is go and get yourself checked out first," Ms Miller said.

During the visit a clap of thunder was heard in the distance prompting Mrs McCulkin to exclaim: "Oh no, another storm is coming."

Senior Fire and Rescue officer, Assistant Commissioner Neil Reid, said he expected it would take at least a week to clean up just the town streets.

"All the agencies are working well and they have made a good start to the big job," he said.

Michele McCoombes, who lives on the outskirts of Fernvale, arrived home on Tuesday just after the storm had ripped through.

"When I drove into Fernvale it looked like a war zone, I was truly shocked," she said.

"There were people lining the streets on mobile phones, taking pictures and ringing friends to tell them just what had happend. They looked stunned."

"Massive trees on my property were shredded, now it will take weeks to clear up the mess, I just hope we will get some help from the council."
