Prepare for the Russian revolution

THE world famous Bolshoi Ballet is coming to Brisbane next year for an exclusive season at QPAC.

A leading arts industry source told The Courier-Mail that the Bolshoi was bound for Brisbane next June, stealing the Premier's thunder by revealing the visit.

Annastacia Palaszczuk was due to announce the Bolshoi coup at the end of this year's QPAC International Series which opens next week and features Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company from Italy.

The Italian company's exclusive Brisbane season opens with Don Quixote next Wednesday with Giselle the following week.

Next year's QPAC International Series is expected to be in June and will be earlier than this year's to fit in with the Bolshoi's busy schedule.

Industry insiders say the Bolshoi visit has been known about for some time and is expected to be funded with assistance of Tourism and Events Queensland.

QPAC chief executive John Kotzas wouldn't confirm or deny the visit when contacted yesterday.

"Contracting for the 2019 QPAC International Series is not finalised therefore I cannot confirm a visiting company for next year," Mr Kotzas said.

"The International Series is a big deal for Queensland, and it's clearly newsworthy to speculate who's coming next, however right now we are very focused on welcoming La Scala Ballet next week."

It's not the first time the Bolshoi has come to Queensland.

The famed Russian company, which is based at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, was last here for the QPAC International Series in 2013.

Since then ballet has been the mainstay of the series which has featured the Paris Opera Ballet (2009), Ballet Nacional de Cuba (2010), The Hamburg Ballet, Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Hamburg State Opera (2012), Bolshoi Ballet (2013), American Ballet Theatre (2014), Ballet Preljocaj (2015), The Royal Ballet (2017).

Bolshoi principal dancer Evgenia Obraztsova was here last year guesting with the Queensland Ballet in their acclaimed production of Swan Lake and may return again next year.

American ballet superstar David Hallberg, who will be in Brisbane to perform with Teatro alla Scala is a Bolshoi regular.
