O’Doherty artists want to take you back to your childhood

SYDNEY-based artists Susan and Peter O'Doherty remembers the moment their exhibition brought tears to their audience's eyes.

Their work, Moving House, was over a year in the making and has been featured at the Rockhampton Art Gallery since May 16.

The gallery was the seventh to be graced by the work.

The pieces features contributions from the pair, to convey the experiences the husband and wife team had growing up.

Susan constructs wooden and painted assemblages that feature objects associated with the domestic sphere. Rooms from inside the house are recreated, including the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and laundry. Meanwhile, Peter's paintings showcase suburban houses, facades, driveways and streetscapes that reflect Australian architecture.

Susan said the work, whether people had a good or bad experience, takes the viewer back to their childhood.

"These are houses I actually did live in as a child. They are in different locations...I have chosen particular places to build an interior room," she said.

"It's about memory, and moving on...everyone lives in a house, and your home is a safety net.

"Possessions are a form of memory that takes you back."

Peter said the depictions weren't necessarily a literal replication, but of the place and atmosphere of the time.

He said both of them had constantly moved around as children.

"A lot of the stuff is universal to people living in certain decades and all over Australia. We were always on the move," he said.

"I went to about five schools; Sue went to about eight or nine. So it was just an idea that maybe we should do something together."

The couple said they hoped people would draw their own experiences and build their own connections from the work.

The exhibition is open until June 28.
