Is this a shark or a dolphin?

THIS is the picture that's dividing the Gold Coast.

A keen photographer snapped this shot yesterday arvo at Duranbah Beach on the New South Wales border and the internet is going mad.

A surfer can be seen paddling in the water next to - what appears to be - either a shark or a dolphin.

Much like 'The Dress' (which was definitely black and blue, not white and gold), Facebook users can't work out which it is.

But photographer, Kellie Wilson of Coolangatta, said she didn't notice the dark figure until she uploaded the picture onto her laptop later that night.

"I didn't notice it until I got home and saw the photo on my laptop," she said.

"I uploaded it because I wanted to find the surfer ... turns out it was actually my friend's son, he wasn't sure what it was."

Ms Wilson posted the photo to two community Facebook pages, attracting hundreds of likes and comments.

"I didn't expect such a huge reaction," she said.

"People were arguing in the comments, others were saying I was creating fear by posting it.

"Lots of people thought it was a dolphin rather than a shark."

To settle this once and for all, we called in Sea World's resident marine expert Trevor Long.

"I think it's definitely a dolphin," he said.

"It only looks like a flat tail because it's being distorted by the angle of the wave.

Thanks for settling this once and for all Trev!
