GARY Baxter's first memory of attending a town show was watching cars and motorbikes as a little boy.

The day his father took him to watch motorcyclists ride inside a rounded cage, Gary's passion was born.

"I just remember my dad taking me when I was very small watching this motorbike inside this round cage, going around upside down and everything. That's one thing I will never forget," he said.

Now, Gary and fellow driver Matt Luke drive the Trackskill V8 utes to crowds of awed spectators across the country and will be part of the action at Rockhampton Show which starts today.

Gary said his job had a particular perk to it.

"What makes our job fun is that every week it's a different show. You never get bored," he said.

"Plus, it's very hard to get bored driving in a fast V8 anyway; so it's a good, fun job."

Gary said he was fond of the Rockhampton Showgrounds because the track was specialised.

"I love it here. This is a full on speedway track, where most of them are grass," he said.

"We get really fast here, we really get moving... what they will see is two road cars, a Holden 6.0L V8 ute and a Ford XR8 ute out there racing against each other.

"We'll be having a ball... it's fantastic being here in Queensland."

Gary, Matt and their two metal beasts will be at the Rockhampton Show tonight and tomorrow at lunchtime.
