Thief steals car from servo

A ROCKHAMPTON motorist, who was paying for his fuel, got a shock when he saw a thief steal his car on Saturday.

Police yesterday said the light blue Holden Astra sedan, with registration 121JPP, was stolen about 4.10pm as the owner paid at the Coles Express on Fitzroy St.

The thief is described as between 35 and 40 years of age with long wavy hair.

The car was yesterday spotted in Yeppoon.

It's been a busy weekend for police in Rockhampton, who also caught eight drink drivers on New Year's Eve.

The offenders were among 31 drink drivers caught in Rockhampton during phase two of the police's road safety campaign, which was launched on December 23 and will run until tomorrow.

While there have been no fatal crashes over the Christmas period, Insp Hall said there had been 16 fatals in Rockhampton this year, two more than 2010.

"They have mainly been linked to fatigue and speeding," he said.

Insp Hall said the increase in fatals could be a result of the recent mining boom.

"There's more traffic on the road and there's a good chance that would have impacted the number of crashes." Insp Hall urged motorists to drive safely and show a little patience on the roads.

"Let's try and start the new year in the best way possible."

From December 23 there have been:

  • No fatal crashes
  • 4 injury crashes
  • 8 non-injury crashes
  • 31 drink drivers
  • 370 tickets issued for life threatening offences including 30 for seatbelts, 16 for mobile phones and 271 for speeding
