Inked beauty not just a pretty face

IT IS a side few people see of insurance sales assistant Shandah Inglis.

But the 28-year-old winner of a controversial South-East Queensland modelling competition, Inked Beauties, said the images adorning her body are puzzle pieces of her life so far.

Excruciatingly shy and “eccentric” as a child, Shandah says she got the first of four stages of her “single” tattoo only two years ago.

A phoenix – “from death comes life” – on her lower back, a fan – “the winds of change” – on her thigh, and a tiger “taking back the power” on her left shoulder all preceded her last installment, a blue-eyed geisha girl, this year.

Shandah said she was happy in her own skin. And with good reason.

The world traveller, of Maroochydore, recently spent 18 months as a volunteer helping in African orphanages.

Shandah was crowned the winner of the contest – for models with tattoos – on Friday.

The modelling industry generally has a tough view of models with “body art”.

“I’m not fussed either way,” Shandah said. “I can understand Huggies (nappies) not wanting someone covered with tattoos in their commercials, but I’ve never had any problems finding work.”

Shandah and the runner-up, 22-year-old Buderim girl Candice McKinley, are among the finalists who will appear in a television current affairs program.

The competition made headlines across Australia after the organiser, Sunshine Coast girl Sam Plant, said that models with ink were not getting jobs.

Shandah won a modelling portfolio photo shoot, $1000 and gift vouchers.
