MOVIE REVIEW: This spy comedy is a case of double-oh no

IS THIS the worst movie of the year? Probably not, but it is one of the worst comedies of the decade.

Keeping Up with the Joneses should have been a huge success as it had, on paper, all the elements of a great comedy: two of the funniest actors in Hollywood today (Isla Fisher and Zach Galifianakis) plus two of the sexiest actors in the planet (Gal Gadot and John Hamm), with all of them offering some decent acting.

Australia's Isla Fisher and Zach Galifianakis play a suburban American couple embroiled in an international espionage plot when they discover their neighbours (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot) are government spies.

Keeping Up with the Joneses cost $52.5 million to make but pulled in just $7.3 million in the US on the weekend, making it the 10th worst opening weekend for a movie released in more than 3000 theatres in the US since 1982.

So what happened? It's the script. It's just not funny.

Unfortunately director Gregg Mottola (Clear History, Adventureland, Paul, Superbad) did not get enough traction from the live action to save the film, despite his good efforts.

Writer Michael LeSieur (You, me and Dupree, The Maiden Heist) is a great writer for dark, indie comedies but it seems to have missed the mark on the full Hollywood silly comedy, clear proof that writing silly comedy can be harder than writing a decent indie film.

Galifianakis and Hamm are given no lives to survive this debacle, while Fisher and Gadot get lines that are so bad I have trouble believing they signed up for this film.

Keeping Up with the Joneses is a film that will only entertain teenagers recovering from Schoolies.
