EARLIER:

A MACKAY boy is on life support in Townsville Hospital after being attacked by a family pet.

Police have launched an investigation into how and why the german shepherd attacked the three-year old's throat about 6.45pm on Saturday at a home in Grant St, leaving him in a critical condition.

The german shepherd would be euthanised once arrangements were made with a vet, a Mackay Regional Council spokesman confirmed yesterday.

Mackay District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Tony McDowall would not say what happened during the attack but confirmed the dog was a pet.

"I believe it was their dog but as for anything else, such as what has taken place, that's under investigation," he said.

Snr Sgt McDowall said before paramedics arrived, neighbours rushed to help the family during the horrific ordeal by putting the dog back in its kennel and providing first aid to the boy.

The boy was rushed to Mackay Base Hospital and was later transferred to Townsville for surgery.

His grandfather was bitten on the arm by the dog and also was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Mackay Regional Council officers were called to take the dog to the pound.

The owners had since signed an indemnity form requesting the dog be put down, a council spokesman said.

Initial reports said the boy had been flown to Brisbane Mater Children's Hospital.

Although that was confirmed on Sunday by a spokeswoman for the Mater Children's Hospital, the information was incorrect.
