Teen thugs stomp head of 'pedophile'

A GANG of attackers stomped on a man’s head in the Ipswich CBD after accusing him of being a pedophile.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Nathan Dean Gillam’s 14-year-old friend complained a stranger had been following her up the street at 2.11pm.

Gillam, 18, and two male friends then chased the man up the street before forcing him to the ground where they kicked him and stomped on his head.

Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Carmont said members of the public tried to intervene but the attackers verbally abused them.

The trio were seen to walk across the David Trumpy Bridge towards Ipswich Riverlink Shopping Centre where they were stopped by police.

Gillam told police: “All I did was hit a pedophile.”

The victim did not want to make a formal police complaint, so Gillam was only charged with committing a public nuisance.

Sgt Carmont said the offence was at the “very upper end” of public nuisances, but he was not seeking jail time due to Gillam’s age and lack of prior criminal history.

“But it is at the very upper end of vigilantism – taking the law into his own hands,” Sgt Carmont said.

Gillam, who appeared in court wearing a black T-shirt which with the word “Rockstar” on the back, grey shorts and white sneakers, pleaded guilty and was fined $500.

No conviction was recorded.

Defence lawyer Yassar Khan said Gillam’s 14-year-old female friend was walking through town when the older male followed her and tried to speak to her.

“She told him ‘no, I’m only 14’,” Mr Khan said.

Mr Khan said the girl pointed out the man after he happened to walk past and Gillam and his friends “approached him to ask him about the incident”. “He ran and they chased after him.”

Mr Khan said Gillam’s co-offenders were also fined and his client accepted it was “inappropriate behaviour”.

Magistrate Matthew McLaughlin said the man may have been a “sleazy person who was trying to chat up a young girl”, but Gillam’s young friend was not in any danger when she pointed him out.
