Tomic keen to put 2016 behind him

TENNIS: New year, new start. That is the philosophy of Bernard Tomic as he looks to put an inconsistent and sometimes controversial 2016 in the past.

The 24-year-old Gold Coaster reached a career-high ranking of 17 but after missing a number of events and ending the year with an abdominal injury in China, he finished the campaign down at 26 in the world.

He, like his Australian counterpart Nick Kyrgios, had a couple of run-ins with tennis chiefs and a public row with Australia's Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller following his decision to not go to the Rio Olympics.

Tomic said he had regrets at how 2016 went wrong, after also being fined for a row with a spectator at the US Open, but said he was looking forward to better times ahead.

"That situation, those few weeks where I missed the Olympics, was unfortunate, and the US thing was a bit of an incident, but we've moved on from that,” he said.

"I'm not the best, not the brightest, but we all have our problems.

"I think the main thing is I'm doing what I love and I really respect the sport.”

Tomic said he was hoping for a good start to the year on home soil at the Brisbane International.

The tournament will feature a number of top-10 players, including Milos Raonic, Stan Wawrinka, Rafael Nadal, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem, and Tomic said coming up against some world-class players would put him in good stead for the rest of the season.

"It's going to be a strong field,” he said.

"I've managed to reach the semis twice there. I've never got to a final but this year is a new chance for me.”
