Yeppoon filmmaker riding the waves to his career dream
WHEN Tom Patterson picked up his very first video camera four years ago he never thought he'd be entering his own short film in a national competition a few years later.
The Yeppoon State High School student has entered a three-minute surf video into the Reelers Surfing World Competition Australia.
Tom, 18, entered a video of his two younger brothers catching waves at Farnborough and Agnes Water.
The young film maker said he preferred to be behind the camera calling the shots rather than in the surf.
"My brothers are the main surfers of the family and I'm the family photographer and film maker," he said.
"I've always loved photography and about four years ago I started making home videos with my brothers in the backyard then started making short videos and learning how to edit them.
"I just love the control you have with the camera in your hand and putting all of the elements together to create the masterpiece at the end.
"The film had to be about surfing and we're lucky enough here to live right on the beach so all the surf is local surf at Farnborough and there's a little shot of Agnes Water.
"The music used in the film is also by a local guitarist Clyde Schipke who's my guitar teacher. It took about 12 hours for me to film all the shots and create the movie."
Tom said this was the first competition he had entered but hoped it wouldn't be the last.
"It's been really exciting watching the votes add up and seeing people vote for my work. I'm up by 300 votes at the moment but who knows what could happen. So I really need the local support," he said.
