Toowoomba court derails Italian man's working holiday

AN ITALIAN man's working holiday in Australia has been made difficult after a Toowoomba court took his driver's licence from him for the next 12 months.

CitySafe operators alerted police patrolling Margaret St about 2.40am, November 18, to two men leaving a licenced premises and getting into a car near the Neil St intersection, the Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told.

The patrol drove past the car to see Claudio Pregnolato in the driver's seat with his seat belt on and the headlights on, police prosecutor Christie Mahoney said.

The 31-year-old driver blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.081 and was charged with being in charge of a motor vehicle while over the limit which brought about an automatic 24-hour suspension of his driver's licence, Senior Constable Mahoney said.

However, about 3.50am the same day a police patrol had pulled over Pregnolato's Subaru Impreza on the Warrego Highway near Helidon Spar.

This time he blew 0.055, the court heard.

Via an Italian/English interpreter, Pregnolato pleaded guilty to all three offences.

His solicitor Phil Stainton told the court due to language difficulties his client had not fully understood the 24-hour driving suspension and with the time that had elapsed he thought he would be below the 0.05 limit.

His client had arrived in Australia last July on a two-year working visa and had been working on farms in the Gatton area, he said.

Acting Magistrate Roger Stark fined Pregnolato $1000 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for 12 months.
