The man started waving his arms and yelling fire.

"We pulled over and both dived out of the car," Ms Gardner said.

"He called the firies on my phone because I was shaking too much.

"And then he proceeded to put the fire in the car out himself."

Jay Williams from Eastgate Motel on the Range called the fire brigade after seeing the commotion.

"I ran out there and saw what was going on.

"They asked me to contact the firies," he said.

Mr Williams said housekeepers from the hotel jumped into action with fire extinguishers.

Ms Gardner said she wanted to thank the man who helped her.

"He saved our lives.

"If it wasn't for him we could've been injured or killed."

She said she was too shaken up to get his name.

"I'm still in shock.

"I think he operates a local gardening business.

"I'd like to thank him for his bravery and I want to buy him a beer."

Krista Gardner was in Toowoomba for a job interview.

The clothes which she had brought especially for the meeting were damaged by smoke from the fire and flame retardant.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said officers were called to Burnage St about 9.45am.

Smoke was seen coming from the car which crews worked to snuff out.

No one was injured in the incident.
