"WHAT can a white fella tell you about a yarning circle?" Toowoomba State High School principal Tony Kennedy asked at the opening of the school's yarning circle.

"From my early years growing up in Dirranbandi to living in Brisbane, Melbourne and many years overseas to my past year in Toowoomba, I've continued to learn and be wiser from what I learn of local cultures," he said.

"So as principal of this school at the moment, I am caretaker of this place, this yarning circle and I take that with great respect."

Toowoomba State High School has introduced a yarning circle at the Mount Lofty grounds.

The yarning circle is made up of three circles; one for females, one for males and a larger circle in the middle for both sexes to meet.

Year 12 indigenous leader Samuel Dempsey said: "Yarning circles have been used in our heritage for years. It was used as a meeting place for tribes as they pass on their knowledge of their land.

"Students can use the yarning circle as a way to feel connected to our culture and at peace at school."

Year 12 indigenous leader Madison Sedeek said in terms of education, a yarning circle could be used as an outdoor classroom.

Mr Kennedy said the concept of a yarning circle influenced many contemporary forums.

"They are a place to learn, build respectful relationships and to preserve and pass-on knowledge. Everyone is equal within a yarning circle," he said.
