10 worst regions for mobile phone driving offences revealed

THE State's peak motoring body has expressed its frustration at on-going arrogance behind the wheel, as data reveals Queensland's worst regions for mobile phone offences.

The Gold Coast region topped the list for most people caught using their phone while driving, with more than 2400 motorists nabbed in the first half of this year, according to Queensland Police figures.

RACQ's Lauren Ritchie said distracted driving was becoming the fastest growing problem on Queensland roads.

"Whether you're texting, talking on the phone or checking social media while driving it means you're not paying attention on the road," Ms Ritchie said.

"Distraction is included as one of the Fatal Five, which means it's one of the major causes of crashes on our roads."
Ms Ritchie said there was no safe time to use your phone when behind the wheel.

"You see it almost every time you drive, someone staring down at their laps thinking that no one will notice them on their phone," she said.

"Most people recognise the dangers of other drivers on their phone, but too often they think the rule doesn't apply to them.

"Already Queensland's road toll is on track to be worse than 2014, currently sitting at 201 lives lost. That's 13 more than the same time last year.

"It's about time we woke up to ourselves and realised the safest place for your mobile phone out of reach."
