Top-dollar charge for Games

FOR a prime seat at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, expect to pay more than $600 on the Gold Coast.

But a similar seat in Gold Coast's rival city Hambantota Games in Sri Lanka will cost about $100.

The proposed ticket prices were revealed in the cities' bid books, with the ticket prices varying dramatically from city to city.

The Gold Coast would offer a few free events, including athletics (marathon and road walks), cycling road time trial and mountain bike and triathlons, however tickets for prime events such as swimming will set you back between $38 and $300 compared with Hambantota which plans to charge just under $24 for their best seats to all prime events.

Following the Gold Coast City's bid for the games, delegates from Botswana arrived on the coast on Monday.

“Now the presentation is out of the way, the focus is on showcasing the city to each group of delegates as they arrive and securing the necessary votes come November 11,” Mayor Ron Clarke said.

“African nations are very strong in athletics and soccer, so highlighting the quality of our venues and training facilities for these events is particularly important. Delegates are usually only here for a few days and a lot of work is going into the planning for their arrival and to maximise the opportunity to showcase our bid.”

Commonwealth Games Bid Company's Mark Peters said the bid team will be hosting delegates to the coast during the next six months.

Now that the bid book is submitted, the bid team will turn its attention to visits from Commonwealth Games officials.

“The Gold Coast is excited about the prospect of hosting this major event and we need to ensure the delegates see and feel this enthusiasm when they visit,” said Mr Peters.
