Make the most of a Southern Great Barrier Reef visit

With 2900 islands to explore off Queensland's famous Great Barrier Reef, you'll need to make some hard decisions early on about where to go and what to see.

The Southern Great Barrier Reef is one of the region's best-kept secrets, with diving and snorkelling equal to anywhere in the world, so consider heading here first to cross off some bucket-list activities.

You can

  • swim with a turtle or manta ray
  • explore white sandy beaches
  • float  over coral cays in a glass-bottomed boat
  • have a romantic meal or a gourmet picnic on your own private island.

Some islands allow camping; others only have accommodation on luxury resorts and confine their surrounding attractions to guests.

Obviously sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are essential all-round attire for the region's sunny climate.

It doesn't hurt to carry a water bottle either.

You might want to pack some comfortable walking or hiking shoes.

If you're planning on a spot of fishing, you don't need a licence, but you will need one to operate a boat. Check www.nprsr.qld.gov.au for any exclusion zones

Thinking about diving? You must have completed a training course. You can, however, go snorkelling if you're just a beginner. Remember, never go diving or snorkelling alone.
