Bonalbo set for 100th anniversary

ALL roads will lead to Bonalbo at the weekend for what promises to be the biggest celebration in the West of the Range town for 100 years.

Up to 4000 people are expected to converge on the town on Saturday for the Bonalbo Central School’s centenary, while at least half that number is expected to either stay overnight or return on Sunday for the town’s 100th anniversary celebrations.

Accommodation at the Bonalbo hotel and the local bed-and-breakfast are booked out and the Bonalbo Caravan Park is full, with the overflow of campers being directed to the Bonalbo Showground.

Organisers of the twin celebrations are predicting a huge weekend and say all they need for the perfect event is for the weather to remain clear.

“Everything has come together beautifully,” said organiser Jeanette Flanagan.

Former students and teachers will travel from all around Australia and overseas for the school centenary on Saturday which will kick off about 9.30am.

Events at the school will centre on the oval until after the official ceremony at 11am and class photos are taken.

Lunch will be accompanied by the music of the school band, The Giant Rat of Sumatra, and classrooms and displays around the school will be opened after the official ceremony.

There will be an historical photo display, as well as an art exhibition, screenings of videos of old school musicals, and a canoeing display.

The celebrations on Saturday will wind up with a supper dance at the Bonalbo Community Hall.

On Sunday, the focus of the centenary festivities will switch to the town itself and will start at 8.30am with a Lions Club breakfast at the community hall.

At 10am, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at Bonalbo will mark its 100th anniversary with a combined church service at the hall.
