Tragedy takes toll on family
THE Springfield community has rallied to help the grieving wife and six children of a 40-year-old man who drowned at Springfield Lakes.
Taxi driver Gulahmad Mohammadi was tragically killed on July 14 after the car he was driving careered out of control and plunged into Spring Lake.
He was returning to his Springfield Lakes home after work when his wagon hit a roundabout guard rail and left the road at the intersection of Springfield Lakes Blvd and Lakeside Ave about 3.30am.
Mr Mohammadi fled the Taliban in his native Afghanistan, making his way to Australia 11 years ago.
His family joined him in Brisbane in 2005, moving to Springfield 18 months ago.
His eldest son, 17-year-old Mohammad Ali Mohammadi, said his family was struggling to find a way to pay for the mortgage and bills in the wake of his father's untimely death.
“The first two weeks were desperately hard, especially for mum,” Mohammad said.
“She couldn't think of anything apart from dad.”
Mohammad said his father had been determined to make a better life for his family in their adopted country.

“(Dad) loved his family and he worked very hard for us,” Mohammad said.
“He was a great man.
“He wanted us to work hard like him and be successful, to get educated and be someone in the future.”
Mohammad said he and his family had received great support from the local Islamic and Christian church communities.
Ipswich councillor David Morrison, whose electorate takes in Springfield, said the community had launched an appeal to help.
Cr Morrison said the Lions Club of Greater Springfield, together with Bendigo Bank, had set up a bank account specifically to help the Mohammadi family.
“To go through what they have had to go through in war-torn Afghanistan and now this is just a tragedy,” Cr Morrison said.
“They were just starting to get on their feet and make a life for themselves.”
