Greenkeeper knows grounds best, proves with win at champs

NO ONE knows the Yeppoon Golf Club greens quite like Trevor Tougher.

The Yeppoon Golf Club head greenkeeper proved that over the weekend when he took out the Central Queensland Open and Closed Championships on home turf.

After taking out the Yeppoon Open and Closed Championships earlier this year, Tougher, who has been the Yeppoon Golf Club superintendent for the past 22 years - and played for just a few years longer - continued his great record in Open Championships to win the 36-hole CQ event with one-under-par 141 from Jake McLeod on 146.

While only a small field of contested the event, Tougher said the calibre of the field was excellent and was pleased to secure the win over McLeod from Royal Queensland.

"It was pretty good to beat a state player," Tougher said.

"He (McLeod) stayed with me actually. We played a few practice rounds one Thursday and I was lucky enough to get the win in the end.

"He's got a big future ahead of him. We had a great battle, with nine holes to go he was one ahead of me but I got there."

In the B-grade event, Brian Caffrey on 167 won from David Fitzpatrick on 170 on a countback.

The C-grade went to Byron Malone on 190 on a countback from John Patterson.

In the 36-hole net event, Matthew Lacey won A- grade with a score of 137 from Elvis Miller on 140.

Trevor Renata took the honours in B-grade with 135 from David Cross on 141, while C-grade went to John Patterson on 140 from Gavin Daniels on 145.

With the CQ Open done and dusted, Tougher said he has switched his focus to the Holden Scramble Regional Qualifying event at Mercure Capricorn Resort on October 19.

"It has been a pretty good year for me. I don't think I've ever won all three opens with the Club Championships, Yeppoon Open and CQ Open," Tougher said.

"My next big event is the Holden Scramble to try and qualify for the national final. I'm not sure how I'll go; hopefully luck will be on my side again."
