Triathlete does it easily ahead of Qld Tri Series

MATT Hauser has sent a strong message ahead of today's Gatorade Queensland Tri Series after declaring he "took it easy" while annihilating the field of Saturday's Kawana Aquathlon and Triathlon Queensland State Championships at yesterday.

The 17-year-old from Hervey Bay is expected to be among the top finishers at today's race at Kawana after dominating the 2.5km run, 1km swim, 2.5km run.

"Hopefully, I took it easy enough today so I can pull up all right," Hauser said.

"A few of my old training buddies like Dan Coleman will give it a good crack tomorrow so it should be good racing."

Hauser is slated to join esteemed triahtlon coach Dan Atkins at the AIS centre on the Gold Coast from next year as he begins his sports management degree on the tourist strip.

Atkins is one of the best mentors in the country and is regarded by Hauser as the man to help him make it to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

"I am in the 2018 Australian Commonwealth Games Gold squad at the moment so hopefully I can progress through the ranks over the next couple of years and maybe get a spot in the team," he said.

"I am still a part of the Australia junior triathlon series for another two years so I just want to keep progressing through the age groups.

"I will move up to the Olympic distance, as I am doing half that at the moment in the sprint distance, and hopefully continue to get better."

And as he approaches his last week of high school, Hauser said he could not think of a better graduation gift than finishing on top of the podium today.

"A win would be amazing," he said.

"Hopefully I can improve on my fifth placing at the World Junior Triathlon Championship earlier this year and get stuck in to some bigger races."

Jess Ashford took out yesterday's women's event.
