Tributes flow for environmentalist Terry Hampson

A PROUD Labor man who was instrumental in securing World Heritage listing for Fraser Island has been honoured in Parliament following his death.

South Brisbane MP Jackie Trad paid tribute to Terry Hampson, who she described as "a great Queenslander and a great comrade".

Mr Hampson was born in Allora on the Darling Downs in 1935 and died in Cambodia three weeks ago, following a long-anticipated visit to the Angkor Wat temple.

He moved to Brisbane for work as a young man and joined the Australian Labor Party in 1965.

He rose to the role of state secretary in 1998.

"Much of the work he did during his time in party office was credited for the organisation and electoral success achieved by Labor in 1989 under the leadership of Wayne Goss," Ms Trad said.

"Terry was particularly passionate about the environment movement, and he spent 30 years as an executive member on the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation.

"Because of that, he played an enormous role in the protection of Fraser Island and its eventual World Heritage listing."

Mr Hampson became a member of the Order of Australia in 2001 for his contributions to environmental conservation and politics.

"Terry was a life member of the Labor Party, and he is survived by his beautiful wife of many decades, Anne Hampson, his children and many grandchildren," Ms Trad said.

"Please know that we grieve with you for the loss of one of Australia's greatest environmentalists, a passionate reformer, a social justice campaigner, a strong unionist and, very proudly, a Labor man."
