Trio to lead Kangaroos re-build
AUSSIE RULES: Rockhampton Kangaroos will adopt a more professional approach to the 2017 season in their bid to wrestle back results in their favour.
The Kangaroos will field three A-grade captains this year, opting against a solo skipper after seeing a change up was necessary.
In sign that shows leadership is not lacking, 14 players in total were nominated by the players.
Emerging in front, Brent Wood, Daniel Trinca and Alex Rankine.
"Usually we have just the one. But this year we are trying to start a re-build and share the workload," coach Michael Rose explained.
"I set out all the values which we will play, live and train by and the players responded well to it.
"I was very happy with the three, the way they have led in pre-season has been great."
Rose said each player will bring set but specific attributes required to help his side go from also-rans to contenders.
"Wood brings that intensity with the pill, the skill and really leads by his actions on the field," he praised.
"Trinca follows instructions to a tee. He sacrifices an individual role to do the set job for the team and has a hunger to learn.
"Young Rankine is coming into his own skill wise and plays with high aggression. We had to pick a captain under-21 and he was the standout. His attacking game is really good and he will develop into a fine player.
"We are a lot stricter on rego this year. We lost $3,000 to unpaid fees last year and it has to stop.
"It has made our numbers drop but the boys will be back and we will be more professional."
Halting the Yeppoon Swans juggernaut will be the main aim of the rest of the AFL Capricornia comp. Mark Wallin's side purely a class above.
Kangaroos face Boyne Island Saints away in a tricky opening round. It will give Rose a chance to try new tactics, which he would not reveal.
"I have defensive ideas how to stop Yeppoon, we will employ them and play it out. I know we can cut the margin down initially and improve from there," he said.
"Saints are supposed to have recruited well and have plenty of good players. We have a set game plan and are looking forward to it.
"Anthony Pierce, our cult hero, is returning to the club this year. He will give the boys a big morale boost."
