Lucky truck driver escapes notorious highway stretch

THE DRIVER of a truck that swerved to miss an oncoming vehicle on the Bruce Hwy yesterday was lucky to be alive according to Gympie Fire and Rescue officers.

The north-bound two tonne Isuzu truck, carrying construction material for garden sheds and aviaries, left the road , hit a culvert and was catapulted in the air before landing on its roof.

The force of the impact squashed the cabin which housed the male driver. The 26-year-old escaped the vehicle but was taken to Gympie Hospital by ambulance with lacerations to his head.

Gympie Fire and Rescue's acting station officer, Bill Edgar, said it could have been a lot worse.

Mr Edgar said the crash occurred just south of the Puma Truck Stop at Kybong near the Traveston Crossing turn-off.

An area of the Bruce Hwy notorious for fatal traffic crashes.

He said Gympie paramedics were first on the scene and they called Fire and Rescue when the saw smoke coming from the overturned truck.

"By the time we got there, there was no smoke and the driver was out of the vehicle," Mr Edgar said.

"The way the trucked flipped over and crushed the cab he was lucky to get out with those injuries."
