Truckie on ecstasy

A TRUCKIE has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs after being picked up on the Capricorn Highway near Emerald on Wednesday about 3pm.

The Central region’s top traffic policeman, Inspector Lyle Mitchell, said the male driver, 50, was tested by officers from the roadside drug testing unit during Operation Swing.

Insp Mitchell said the man tested positive to having ecstasy in his system.

He was driving a semi-trailer.

“He has been served a notice and will appear before the courts,” Insp Mitchell said.

He said officers from the unit completed a number of tests in the Rockhampton region recently, with no positive results reported.

Insp Mitchell said recent research suggested as high as one in three long-distance drivers was using illicit drugs.
