Trump sends condolences to victims of chopper crash

President Trump on Friday offered his "deepest sympathies" to the family of West Virginia businessman and philanthropist Chris Cline, who died alongside his daughter in a helicopter crash off the coast of the Bahamas on July 4.

Trump sent the condolence message in a tweet Friday night from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is spending the holiday weekend, the New York Post reports.

"My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of great businessman and energy expert Chris Cline, his wonderful daughter, Kameron, and their friends, on the tragic accident which took place in the Bahamas. The great people of West Virginia will never forget them!" Trump wrote in the tweet.

Cline, a coal tycoon and major Republican donor who turned his energy company into a billion-dollar operation, was killed Thursday, a day before his 61st birthday, when the chopper crashed at about 2am shortly after taking off from Grand Cay in the Bahamas.

The mining entrepreneur's 22-year-old daughter Kameron was among the seven victims on the aircraft, which was discovered 3.2 kilometres off his private island.

"We are all so deeply saddened to announce the deaths of our beloved father Chris and our sister Kameron. This loss will be felt by all those who had the privilege of having known them," Cline's family said in a statement.

Cline was rushing his 22-year-old daughter to a Florida hospital for a medical emergency when their helicopter plunged into the Bahamian sea, according to a report.

Cline began experiencing the unspecified medical issue while attending her dad's birthday party on his private island near Grand Cay, a friend of the family's, Lauree Simmons, said on Friday.

Relatives called authorities when the chopper failed to reach Fort Lauderdale, it was reported in the Palm Beach Post on Friday.

A major Republican donor worth $US1.8 billion ($A2.6 billion), according to Forbes, Cline started working in the West Virginia mines at the age of 15 before building his own empire. He dated Tiger Woods' ex-wife Elin Nordegren for a number of years.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Meteorologists have said weather was not a factor.
