Trump to make low-key UK trip

DONALD Trump's planned stay with the Queen at Buckingham Palace is unlikely to go ahead.

The US President had been offered the honour of a full state visit to the UK when he met with Prime Minister Theresa May at the White House in January.

Such a visit would traditionally include staying with the Queen at the palace but furore broke out in Britain over the offer - one usually reserved for a second term president.

The trip has been repeatedly delayed because Mr Trump fears the opposition he could face from Brits who dislike him.

He has even urged Ms May to ensure he gets a warm welcome from the British people before he comes to the UK.

Prime Minister May's and President Trump's relationship was tested in May at a NATO summit in Brussels as the Conservative leader confronted the Republican over 'damaging' intelligence leaks in the wake of the Manchester bombing.

The Evening Standard reports Mr Trump will come to Britain early next year, but it will be a stripped-back trip without the trappings of an official state visit.

It says he will stay with the US ambassador rather than the royal family and the trip would not include the extravagant celebrations attached to state visits.

Mrs May invited the President for a state visit days after he took office in a bid to build closer relations with the US in the aftermath of Brexit.

But the invitation prompted a huge backlash as leading politicians said Mr Trump should not be granted the honour because of his controversial policies on immigration and terrorism.

Mr Trump asked the PM to delay the invitation because he did not want his visit to be interrupted by mass protests.

But a more low-key trip might spark less opposition - and London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has publicly warred with the President, has apparently signalled he would accept such a visit.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "Our position on the state visit has not changed - an offer has been extended and President Trump has accepted.

"Exact dates for President Trump to visit have not yet been arranged.”
