Yeppoon tsunami warning cancelled

THE Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled a tsunami warning that had been issued this morning for the east coast of Queensland from Yeppoon to Bowen.
 
The warning, which was issued at 8.44am, was cancelled at 9.27am after waves from the magnitude 7.9 quake near Vanuatu Islands displayed no threat.

The undersea earthquake occurred near the islands at 8.03am (EST).

BoM warnings placed the east coast of Queensland on tsunami watch for less than an hour before it was cancelled.

"No tsunami waves have been observed that pose a threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories," the cancellation said.
