TV cricket star in the making?

Ben Cooper
Ben Cooper David Nielsen

FORMER Lismore cricketer Ben Cooper could be our next cricket superstar.

Literally.

The 19-year-old will appear in a new television reality series, Cricket Superstar, that follows 15 up-and-coming cricketers, with the winner to receive a State rookie contract for the 2012-13 season.

"It was an experience and I'm glad I did it," Cooper said.

"I made some new friends and rubbed shoulders with past and present Australian players."

Cooper couldn't reveal much about the show, but said there were plenty of non-cricket challenges that took him out of his comfort zone.

"Some of the activities were tough and I did some things I'd never thought about doing before.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime kind% of thing and I took every chance I could."

Cooper moved to Darwin in 2009 and was selected for the Northern Territory Under-19s soon after.

He has since moved to Hobart but has again been selected for the Northern Territory team to contest the national carnival in Adelaide in February.

Cooper hopes to play for Australia one day with older brother Tom, who has had recent success playing for South Australia in the Ryobi Cup and Sheffield Shield.

"I hope I can get to his level and match it with him," Ben Cooper said.

"I would love to play for Australia with him one day, but it doesn't faze me if I ever have to play against him either."

And that could happen.

If Ben wins the rookie contract it would be with the Tasmanian Tigers.

The 10-part series that features former Australian captain Allan Border as head judge will screen on FOX8 on Austar from January 4.
