UPDATE: RACQ-CQ Rescue has been called back into action after two men aboard the yacht Chesapeak activated an EPIRB.

A spokeswoman said the crew flew to the boat, which has been drifting at sea since 12.30am, and deployed a smoke flare to help a Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) crew find it.

The helicopter circled overhead monitoring the vessel until the water-based rescue crew arrived on the scene.

The yacht was then towed to nearby Shaw Island. It's believed the two men onboard are being taken to the mainland by VMR volunteers.

EARLIER: TWO men spent a scary night at sea after their yacht broke its moorings, tore its jib and lost power near St Bees Island, east of Mackay, early this morning.

A police spokesman said two men, aged 59 and 33, called for help after the boat struck trouble at about 12.30am.

Volunteer Marine Rescue and Whitsunday Water Police crews lost contact with the men at about 4am but received a text message with their coordinates at about 6.15am, he said.

RACQ-CQ Rescue was called into action at about 7.15am and found the boat about 12km east of Carlisle Island or 54km east of Mackay shortly afterwards.

A spokeswoman said the helicopter crew deployed an emergency radio so the boat could communicate with Volunteer Marine Rescue crews, who were on route to retrieve the boat and its occupants.
