Two-year-old boy drowns in his family's dam

A TWO-year-old boy has drowned in a dam on his family's property in rural south-east Queensland, leaving the community in mourning.

The toddler's grandfather noticed he had disappeared from their house at South Maclean about 6:00pm (AEST).

More than 150 local residents, State Emergency Service volunteers and police officers searched the 35-hectare property overnight.

Senior Sergeant Tony Jackson says firefighters found the boy's body early this morning when they drained a dam close to the family home.

He says 200 million litres of water were pumped from the dam during the search.
