A RECORD number of a unique turtle species that is mid-breeding season is under the protection of conservationists.

The Fitzroy Basin Association Inc. (FBA) and Greening Australia are working in partnership through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Programme and Australia Pacific LNG to protect the nests of a small and unique species - the Fitzroy River turtle - during the 2015 breeding season.

The breeding season runs from August to January and already over 80 nests have been protected - over double the total for the whole nest protection season last year - a FBA spokesperson said.
