USQ student found dead

A POST mortem examination will be carried out on the body of an American student who has been found dead in a residential college at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba.

A police spokesman said Emily Spickler, 19, was found dead in her Baker Street home about 10.30pm yesterday.

He said her cause of death was not yet known but was not considered suspicious at this stage.

Friends raised the alarm and called police.

USQ's chief operating officer Bernard Lillis said that at this stage little information was available until police had conducted their investigation into the student's death.

“We do know that the student is an international exchange student.”

University counsellors were immediately called in to counsel students from the college and have put in place a number of support mechanisms for the students.

"This has come as a complete shock to the students and to the University and we send our deepest condolences to the student's family," Mr Lillis said.

"University staff are working closely with police in their investigation and until such time that more information becomes known it would be improper to speculate on the cause of death or any circumstances surrounding the incident."

Mr Lillis said that students from all of the residential colleges have been informed of the incident and that the university student services section was working closely with residential college staff to support students at this time.
