Vegetable garden proves a hit with neighbours too

WALLY Plahn grew up with a plate full of vegetables, all home grown on his family's Cawarral farm.

Now 78, Wally is carrying on the practice in the veggie patch of his Rockhampton home, with a new batch of cucumbers almost ready to harvest.

Wally was born and bred on the farm in Cawarral and owned it for 15 years himself, but sold it off about 18 years ago after the drought made farming too difficult on the property.

"It just got too dry, you couldn't grow anything, so we sold up and moved in here," he said.

For the last eight years, Wally has rotated different vegetables in his patch and given them away to family, friends and neighbours, while of course keeping enough for him and his wife.

Wally said it not only keeps him busy, but as a pensioner it's also a good way to save money on the grocery bill.

While he sometimes runs into problems with the temperature, Wally also has his own handmade shade structure which he uses when the Rockhampton heat really ramps up.
