VIDEO: Homeowner powerless as fire rips through garage
UPDATE: Retiree Arnold Thies was contemplating whether or not it was time to get out of bed when he heard a loud bang in his Wilsonton back yard.
He sprang up to investigate and was shocked to see flames coming from the front of his Ford Falcon ute parked in a shed.
It was not long before the flames spread to his daughter's Ford Territory, which was also parked in the two-bay garage.
"Within five minutes the whole place was practically destroyed," Mr Thies said.
He used a garden hose to wet down a neighbouring shed, which sustained minor fire damage.
The blaze also destroyed a new generator which was on the back of Mr Thies' ute.
"It had only done eight hours."
Firefighters arrived at the Bridge St home soon after receiving a call for help at 4.08am.
Mr Thies, 74, said his daughter and son-in-law always used the spare car space because they lived next door.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service fire investigator John Burrows said the cause of the fire was being treated as suspicious.
He said he would work with police to determine the cause.
Toowoomba detectives yesterday doorknocked the area as a part of their investigation.
A man located in the vicinity of the fire was questioned about the incident before being charged on a completely unrelated matter.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
