Exciting new extreme sports park to lure tourists

A COUPLE of local blokes putting their hard-earned and sweat towards building something cool for Gladstone ... it's a story you just can't resist.

We even agreed to keep the boys' identity on the down low before they get their wake park up and running in Gladstone. It's early stages and we wouldn't want to, in any way, jeopardise the success of this project.

You only have to go up the road to Mackay, however, to see how successful this sort of water facility can be, with plans to expand the proposed Gladstone venue beyond just a wakeboard lagoon. The Mackay GoWake Cable Park is still going strong after many years.

It has not only become an destination for the city's youth on hot days, it has also produced wakeboarding stars and attracted its fair share of visitors including competitors for organised events.

Probably most importantly, it has created a facility for Mackay young people who may never have the chance to wakeboard. It has given the city's youth something healthy and exciting to do.

It can be an expensive sport when it comes to finding a boat and all the gear. The cable-style wakeboard park is an easy and affordable way to get out and pull off a few front side spins, ollies, backside lipslides or roll to blind.

At a time when Gladstone is looking to diversify into more tourism-based activities and attractions, everyone should be backing these boys. As avid wakeboarders, they are following their dreams to get this park up and running.

It's a well-worn phrase "build it and they will come". If these fellas can get all their due diligence done, they deserve the full backing of the Gladstone Regional Council to put another block in place that is going to help build Gladstone into a sustainable and desirable destination for visitors and residents alike.

Here's wishing them clear air and glass.
