Walker wins bout by fast knockout ahead of boxing titles
ROCKHAMPTON might not have to wait long for its next Australian champion.
This time in boxing.
Because based on present form, Rockhampton PCYC heavyweight boxer Sam Walker (pictured) is looking good in the lead-up to the Australian Amateur Boxing Titles in Sydney at the end of next month.
Walker took just 21 seconds to knock out his opponent, Zach Noone, in only his second Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bout in the main event at the Battle of the Beach in Yeppoon on Saturday night.
Walker was using the MMA bout for both fun and fitness in his preparation for the Australian championships.
He didn't get much fitness, but it was lots of fun.
"The bell went and I followed him around the ring, then caught him in the corner, landed a few punches, he went down and the ref called it," Walker said.
Some of those present were disappointed the referee stopped the bout so quickly.
But it was obvious Walker was several classes above his opponent and it was the right thing to do.
Walker looked in awesome touch as he landed a left jab, followed by a right punch and then a right hook in quick succession to fell Noone.
"It ended up being more about fun than fitness because I was using the bout as part of my training and preparation for the Australian titles," Walker said.
"But it was still a great night. There were some excellent fights and it was a good environment. So yeah, it was fun. I'll go back for sure and have another MMA fight next year."
Next on Walker's agenda is a bout in Kirra on the Gold Coast in two weeks' time with the Rocky PCYC.
And Walker is relishing the opportunity.
That is because his last scheduled fight, the Queensland Championships in Mackay last month, he won on a walk through.
So he is already Queensland heavyweight champion.
"My last fight at the state titles in Mackay I didn't get a bout," Walker said. "I won on walk through.
"That's not the way I wanted to win the Queensland heavyweight title.
"But I do get a shot at the Australian title soon, so it's all good."
