Waratah cops $20,000 fine for homophobic slur

WARATAHS forward Jacques Potgieter has been fined $20,000 ($10,000 suspended) by the Australian Rugby Union for making homophobic slurs during Sunday's win over the Brumbies.

The South African lock admitted making comments contrary to the ARU's Inclusion Policy and will also undergo additional education and awareness training.

The former Springbok was sanctioned following a probe by the ARU's Integrity Unit, after the incident was referred by SANZAR.

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver said: "We take the issue of homophobia in sport seriously and want to provide a positive environment for everyone involved in Rugby. Comments of this nature cannot be tolerated.

"Our Inclusion Policy reinforces Australian Rugby's commitment to ensure every individual, whether they're players, supporters, coaches or administrators, feel safe, welcome and included regardless of race, gender or sexuality."
