It's official: Ipswich just loves the Commodore

IT'S official - the Holden Commodore rules in Ipswich.

An RACQ analysis of insurance data for the city identified the Holden Commodore, followed by the Toyota Corolla, as the most popular cars to be found on Ipswich streets.

The Ford Falcon came in third place as the car of choice for the daily drive.

RACQ Executive Manager Insurance Communications Mike Sopinski said Holden's decision to end manufacturing in Australia did not deter Ipswich motorists.

"I think we'll be seeing the Commodore on the road for years to come," he said.

Mr Sopinski said car buyers considered a number of factors when selecting vehicles, with affordability among the top, if not the most important.

"The reliability of a vehicle is also high on the car shopping checklist, as is the overall reputation of the vehicle manufacturer."

Roadvale's Griffiths family are self-confessed Commodore fanatics with three registered Commodores among 18 Commodores they have collected over the years.

The family also races Commodores with the Ipswich West Moreton Auto Club at Willowbank.

Ted Griffiths started his love for the Holden in the 1970s when he bought an HK and the Commodores have followed.

"We buy a few for spare parts," Mr Griffiths said. "When the boys see one they bring it home if they think it's a deal. Both the boys are Commodore crazy."

Ted Griffiths drives one of the original Commodores, a 1980 VC, while his sons drive newer models.

"I drive 60km each way to work every day so I need something reliable," he said.
