Welcome baby turtles into the world at Mon Repos Beach

WELCOME TO THE WORLD: See the hatchlings on Mon Repos Beach. Yes, they are this cute!

WE FELL in love with Crush on Finding Nemo, but that's nothing like meeting the real deal.

Every year from November to March, mumma turtles take over Mon Repos Beach to lay their precious clutches of eggs.

Come January, hundreds of tiny hatchlings, just like Crush, are born on the beach and eggs continue to hatch until March.

Home to the only ranger-led turtle experience on the Australian Eastern seaboard, Mon Repos Beach off Bundaberg is the place to be this time of year.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Mon Repos ranger Cathy Gatley said seeing the mummas nesting and the babies hatch was an experience like no other.

"Seeing the little hatchlings emerging from their nests, watching the sand bubble as they start to push towards the surface and then seeing them take their first journey across the beach is fun and awe-inspiring," she said.

"I've been at Mon Repos coming up to 20 years and love working with the turtles as they're such peaceful and majestic ancient mariners that have beaten all the dangers and made it to adulthood.

"Each time I see a 100kg loggerhead turtle drag herself across the beach to the dunes I get a thrill."

Watch as the baby turtles break their fragile shells and open their eyes for the first time.

They use an amazing natural phenomena called 'natal homing' which causes the senses in their snout to remember where they were born, which is why the mumma turtles come home to have their own young.

The turtles need to focus during their scramble down the beach in order to lock in their location.

Ms Gatley encouraged visitors to make the journey to Mon Repos this season.

"But pack your patience! Turtles operate on turtle time, which can be at any time during the night, so come prepared to wait, the encounter is well worth it," she said.
