When mum fled someone took bike

A NORTH Rockhampton mum says she is disgusted her son's bike was stolen by looters after she was forced to leave the property amid the threat of a bushfire on Sunday.

Danielle, who lives at Koongal, said her 13-year-old son's BMX bike was taken from the garage of their Gable Street home between 1pm and 4pm.

“The garage door was left up because I just flew out of there,” she said.

Danielle said she rushed the kids away from the house because the bushfire was getting too close for comfort.

The threat passed quickly but later in the afternoon Danielle said they noticed the bike was missing.

The bike, a $400 Christmas present, was the only thing taken from Danielle's garage.

“We thought, 'How can people do this?' When you're fighting a disaster in the back and some people are walking past and just taking whatever they like.

“Because the garage door was up they probably thought no one was home.”

Danielle reported the theft to police and said she was told there had been other homes hit during the evacuation of hundreds of people from homes in Koongal, Frenchville and Lakes Creek.

Yesterday afternoon a police spokesperson said officers would investigate any reports of theft during that period.

The spokesperson said when homes were evacuated officers would try their best to do security patrols of the areas.
