Where are the jobs? $30m Bowen Basin package under fire

AFTER a couple of days with "bureaucrats and politicians" Graeme Kanofski just wants to start creating jobs in the Bowen Basin.

As the new chair of the $30million Bowen Basin Jobs Package, which was announced during the last Federal election, it will be his job to bring it all together.

That is once he has been given the framework of how the package will work.

The speed of delivery of the package has drawn criticism from Labor Senator Anthony Chisholm, who has written to the government asking when it would be rolled out.

"The Liberal National Party still have no guidelines, no plan and no idea about how to deliver local jobs for the Bowen Basin," he said.

"I doubt there will be any money out the door this financial year."

And he is most likely right, with the government telling Mr Kanofski his committee must have its "local investment plan" completed by June 30.

Once that's completed, possible applicants will know whether to apply and once applications are received they will be sent to Canberra to be given the tick or not.

However, Mr Kanofski, wants to speed the process along. He said he won't waste money on reports because the area has been studied enough and the committee will draw on those.

"I've spoken to all of the committee members and they're keen to get on with it," he said.

"We think we can deliver in a pretty good time span. At the end of the day we're trying to get some jobs and investment in regional Australia, the longer we take the longer that will take, we need to extract the digit and get on it with."

The last hurdle is receiving the application templates from the government, which could hold up the whole schedule.

"We have been assured to have them in plenty of time for our meeting by mid-March," he said.

"So the next couple of weeks they should have template out and we can start working."
